One of Shakespeare’s most treasured plays, Twelfth Night is a rollicking romantic comedy with several interlaced plots of mistaken identities, practical jokes; and in the words of Feste the jester, “thus the whirligig of time brings in his revenges.” The twins Sebastian and Viola get separated after their ship wrecks and believe each other has drowned. Viola dresses as a boy to become a servant to the Duke Orsino, falling madly in love with him. But Orsino loves the Countess Olivia and sends Viola (as a boy) to court Olivia on his behalf, but Olivia ends up falling in love with Viola. When Viola’s twin Sebastian arrives, a flood of confusion and mistaken identity abounds.
For nearly three decades, Woodstock Shakespeare Festival has been performing dynamic productions of the “Best of the Bard” at the Comeau Property, where there’s always free admission, gorgeous scenery, and professional entertainment for the entire family. “Bring a blanket, bring a chair, bring a picnic.” Our open-air stage is located walking distance from downtown Woodstock, NY. Our shows always begin at 5:30pm, leaving plenty of time to shop beforehand or enjoy Woodstock’s nightlife afterwards.
Commemorating the Festival’s 29th season and its commitment to making Shakespeare accessible to all, the play is performed outdoors in Woodstock on an Elizabethan-style stage. Designed by Broadway set-designer Salvatore Tagliarino, the stage was built in 1996, with approval by the Woodstock Town Board; it was rebuilt in 2005 aided by a matching grant from the Catskill Watershed Corporation.
